It felt like a long afternoon at obstetric triage today getting monitored, largely owing to a 1hr45m wait in the waiting room before I even got seen. I was so tired and uncomfortable waiting, and just wanted to lie down on the floor and sleep.

Just felt so low and exhausted. The husband sent me along with instructions to tell the midwife this, which I did. She was very kind.

I had a routine appointment with the obstetric Consultant today, following up on my nausea.

The husband came with me, to protect me from it all. I’m overwhelmed and needed the support.

Arrived for a 9.45am appointment and waited a little while, then saw a nurse to give a urine sample and check blood pressure and fetal heart rate. Then waited a little while longer to see the doctor.

It wasn’t a doctor I’d seen before but she was very nice.

After having had my blood pressure monitored at the hospital on Friday and being sent away and declared OK, the midwife from my home monitoring trial wanted to check in with me again today. I did my readings and she called me about 4.30pm and said she’d like me to go into the hospital to get monitored again.

I had a dentist appointment at 5pm, so we agreed I’d go to the dentist then straight up to the hospital. Dentist was uneventful. Good.

I arrived at the hospital about 6.30pm and this time didn’t even need to wait in the waiting room so the tests were done within the hour. Blood pressure, urine dip, fetal heartrate and some blood tests.

I just had to wait for a doctor to look at the results.

You’ll recall I’m on an NHS research trial for home blood pressure monitoring during pregnancy.  I have to test my blood pressure and do a urine dip once a week.

Last night when I took my weekly blood pressure readings they all came out really high – five consecutive readings of around 150 / 95.  Too high.  I did the readings around 8pm and I wondered if I ought to seek medical advice immediately, but upon looking on the internet I was assured that I ought to worry if I had a headache or swelling in my hands and feet.  I didn’t.  And there was no protein in my urine.  I decided it would be OK to wait until the midwife called me for my phone consultation the next morning.

A very routine appointment with the midwife today, which is how it should be.

Urine dip, blood pressure test, external examination and fetal heart rate – all normal.

I had an extra midwife appointment today, to check up on me because I’d been ill.

Happily I am now feeling reasonably well – certainly adequately medicated and less depressed – so the appointment was brief and straightforward. I communicated this, everyone was pleased, all good.

The husband came along with me, but that’s probably the last time he’ll come to routine appointments for now as I can manage by myself and they are indeed now routine.

My midwife called the Consultant on Monday and got me an appointment within 48 hours of her call.  Easy.  Do not even get me started on what a massive difference it would have made to my life if this had happened nine weeks ago when my GP sent me to triage, or seven weeks ago when my first midwife told me to try some ginger… I remain oh so very angry about the decimating effect that this has unnecessarily had on my life.  So so so let down.

The first midwife appointment was today.  The husband and I dithered a bit over whether he should come.  I asked two friends for advice.  One said he should come to show he is supportive, to meet the midwife, and to give his medical history.  One said he shouldn’t bother as it is a long appointment which he will be barely involved with.  We went with yes, to show willing and because I have been so ill that he wants to be more involved with my care than usual.

So well, it was OK.  I liked the midwife enough, she seemed very nice.  But the appointment was confusing and it is a good job I already knew what to expect and how the system works because all of that wasn’t explained.  She didn’t even explain what a midwife was and what her role would be, for example.

So the husband and I decided to take a couple of nights away in fancy hotels (thanks daily deals sites!) because I felt a bit less sick and could manage a quiet road trip.  Off we headed towards deepest darkest Scotland.

At lunchtime we reached the edge of deepest darkest Scotland and stopped for lunch at a Loch-side pub.  I’m still off food, but chose potato skins and when they came I ate them.
