All I’ve ever heard from friends who are pregnant is pregnancy is not an illness, and don’t treat them differently because they are pregnant.  Invite them to stuff, expect them to join in.  Expect them to work.  Expect them to exercise.  All I have seen is people achieve this.

I cannot achieve this.  Pregnancy is not an illness.  But I am certainly ill and pregnancy is the direct cause of my illness.

Went in to the GP surgery this morning to get my whooping cough vaccine which is recommended to all pregnant women after 28 weeks in order to pass on immunity to protect newborn babies. Having had whooping cough myself twice I was pleased to be vaccinated, it is a nasty illness and would be very dangerous for a baby. It stung a bit, but not too bad.

Got to the hospital for monitoring today at 10am (as they told me to) and was seen within half an hour, which is great and much much quicker than usual. However, still ended up being there for five and a half hours. I was bored stupid.

Honestly I lose track, it is so repetitive and they tell me very little. For whatever reason this time they wanted me to wait and see a doctor, and the doctor wanted to run their plan past their superior. It all took ages with a lot of waiting.

Hi [Client for new project I promised I’d do in April and May]

As you know I am pregnant, and my due date is 4th July. As such I thought I would be free to complete this project during April and May. However, I have had some complications with my blood pressure and I currently need to attend monitoring appointments at the hospital taking up two full days each week – plus other routine appointments.

It felt like a long afternoon at obstetric triage today getting monitored, largely owing to a 1hr45m wait in the waiting room before I even got seen. I was so tired and uncomfortable waiting, and just wanted to lie down on the floor and sleep.

Just felt so low and exhausted. The husband sent me along with instructions to tell the midwife this, which I did. She was very kind.

The husband and I had a night away in a lovely hotel, and whilst Saturday went really well I was completely wiped out on Sunday. When we got home I had a two hour nap then went to bed early and slept for another twelve hours or so.

When I woke up at lunchtime I had to be prized and cajoled out of bed by the husband. I just felt so tired, and low. I didn’t want to go to work. After managing a couple of hours the husband re-evaluated me and politely suggested I take the day off sick.

A bit from the husband today:

The First Kick

On a few occasions I have tried to feel the baby moving, but nothing. At the start of the month I went to the USA for a week for work, and the night I got back I tried again. This time I felt him! It’s really weird – a bit like having my hand on the duvet when the cat got under it! A funny wriggly feeling in a place that nothing should be moving. It’s also lovely. It’s not quite an “almost in tears” moment like the fluttering heart on the first ultrasound, but it’s pretty darned exciting. I have seen him moving around on the ultrasounds, and my wife has been able to feel that daily for ages, and I’ve felt a bit left out.

I had a routine appointment with the obstetric Consultant today, following up on my nausea.

The husband came with me, to protect me from it all. I’m overwhelmed and needed the support.

Arrived for a 9.45am appointment and waited a little while, then saw a nurse to give a urine sample and check blood pressure and fetal heart rate. Then waited a little while longer to see the doctor.

It wasn’t a doctor I’d seen before but she was very nice.

Today the husband did a little bit of planning around the practicalities of what we will need to get bought in for Kip’s arrival. Although I’m only 25 weeks I’m quite conscious that all this blood pressure stuff might mean they encourage him out early. Not for a while yet I hope, but still best to be sorting some of this stuff out.

I had been told to attend obstetric triage at 11am today to have my blood pressure monitored.

Arrived on time, and waited in the waiting room for an hour.
